Guideline for Modification

Guidelines for modifying materials and using electronic files of the program

Those who receive electronic versions of the Home and Farm*A*Syst materials must agree to certain guidelines in order to maintain the continuity and quality of program materials.

  1. You must appropriately credit original authors of any chapters or worksheets that you attempt to modify, revise, or reproduce. The type of credit will depend on the extent which the original material was used.
    • If more than 50% of an original chapter is reproduced verbatim in a new chapter or worksheet then the names of the original authors shall be listed as co-authors.
    • If less than 50% of an original chapter is reproduced verbatim in a new chapter or worksheet, then the following credit should be included:

If you are using material directly from the national Home*A*Syst Guidebook: "This chapter is based on Chapter #____ of Home*A*Syst: An Environmental Risk Assessment Guide for the Home written by x."

If you are using materials from Washington's versions of the Home and Farm*A*Syst: "This unit/chapter/worksheet on ______ is based on materials modified for Washington's Home and Farm*A*Syst program."

  2. In addition to the acknowledgments of individual authors, you must appropriately credit the original publication as the source for text, illustrations, and tables you reproduce. The following credit is appropriate:

"This publication is based on Home*A*Syst: An Environmental Risk-Assessment Guide for the Home developed by the National Farm*A*Syst/Home*A*Syst Program in cooperation with NRAES, the Northeast Regional Agricultural Engineering Service. Permission to use these materials was granted by the National Farm*A*Syst/ Home*A*Syst Office."

  3. If you plan to modify these materials for local use in Washington, then it is important to acknowledge Washington's Home and Farm*A*Syst Program through WSU and provide its web site address (http://HomeFarmAsyst.wsu.edu) so that others may access this information.
  4. You must contact either the national office or Washington's HAS/FAS office before publishing new chapters or worksheets to determine if the original authors of the National Farm*A*Syst/Home*A*Syst office will need to review the modified chapters or worksheets.
  5. You must agree not to distribute the electronic files to anyone unless permission has been granted by Washington's Home and Farm*A*Syst office and/or the National Farm*A*Syst/ Home*A*Syst office. In Washington, the WSU Home and Farm*A*Syst office is the designated entity that assumes responsibility for overseeing the distribution and use of electronic files. This helps to ensure that any use of the materials remain consistent with the objectives and mission of the program.
  6. Under certain circumstances, Washington's Home and Farm*A*Syst office may designate another committee, individual, or agency, to help monitor the modification of particular materials in order to make effective use of them.
