Soils and Site Screening

The issue: The physical characteristics of your property affects the way water "behaves" on your land. Is your soil sandy or gravelly allowing water to sink in rapidly? Does the slope of your land allow runoff to go into nearby streams or lakes? This assessment unit covers physical characteristics of your property, including soil type and depth, depth to water table, etc. It will also help you make a map of your property showing roads, buildings, natural features, etc., to better help you identify potential sources of trouble.

To see if you should obtain and complete one of these voluntary and confidential risk assessment packets, answer the following questions.

YES NO   Risk Screening Questions
1 Is your property's soil mostly composed of silt and/or clay?
2 Is your property's soil mosly composed of sand and/or gravel?
3 Is your soil depth shallow (less than three feet)?
4 Do you have fractured bedrock under your property?
5 Is the depth to your water table less than 10 feet?
6 Is your homesite less than 25 feet from a surface water body?

Answering yes to any of the questions indicates a potential risk to ground and surface water quality may exist on your property. If you answer yes to any of the questions, contact the Home*A*Syst/Farm*A*Syst office to obtain a complete assessment package on this topic at:
